Workstations for the blind and visually impaired

In the University Library (UB) and in the Branch Library in the Philosophikum II respectively, there is a computer workstation that is equipped for the needs of the blind and visually impaired.

These computers give blind and visually impaired students the possibility to search the library catalogues independently and to read the found literature and work with it on their own.

Due to the connection to the university network blind and visually impaired people are also able to access all electronic information supplies.

For blind people there is a braille display available that converts the text into braille line by line on the screen.

The UB has a special workstation (Symbol Lageplan Bibmap map) for visually impaired students. It contains a reading device, which is able to increase the printed text on the screen with the help of a video camera, and a scanner with a character recognition software. A braille printer with an appropriate sound absorption box is also part of the equipment. This workstation is available to all interested blind or visually impaired citizens of Giessen every day (exept bank holidays) during the opening hours.

The key for this room as well as a braille display you will get at the UB's information desk on the first floor.

Use of the computer workstations

If you want to use the computer workstations, please contact Dr. Thomas Buchkamp. You will receive a special user name and a password.

On appointment, university members can also get the assistance of a student worker.
