Welcome to the Chair of Human-Animal Studies
The relationships between humans and animals are multifaceted, dynamic, and touch upon nearly all aspects of our coexistence. Our research group is dedicated to this cross-cutting topic—openly, dialogue-oriented, and across disciplinary boundaries. Based at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine, we see ourselves as a connecting hub for anyone interested in engaging with animal-related questions of all kinds. Via the German Donor's Association, the professorship is funded by the Bastet Foundation Hamburg, an organization committed to the protection of animals and their habitats worldwide.
We study human-animal relationships at the intersection of questions from behavioral biology, veterinary medicine, animal ethics, sociology, and other fields, drawing on timely and relevant case studies. A particular focus of our work lies in cross-departmental teaching, which aims to provide students and researchers from as many disciplines as possible with a scientifically grounded introduction to the field.
