M.Sc. Economic Geography, Mobility and Spatial Development Policy (Wirtschaftsgeographie, Mobilität und Raumentwicklungspolitik) (WIMORE)

Master's degree program for graduates of a bachelor's degree in Geography, Economics, Social Sciences or Spatial Planning with an interest in knowledge-based regional development, innovation research, regional economics and evaluation research.

Degree Program

The master's degree program in Economic Geography, Mobility, and Spatial Development Policy (WIMORE) is a program that builds on relevant bachelor's degrees in the field of geography. Further information on the admission process can be found under "Application".

The WIMORE master's degree program combines economic geography (in particular knowledge-based regional development and innovation research) with issues relating to new forms of mobility and interaction, consistently placing them in the context of policy areas that are central to regional development.

The program is aimed at bachelor's degree graduates in economic geography who want to deepen their theoretical knowledge of regional economic development and prepare themselves for the associated professional fields. However, the program is also a useful way for graduates in spatial planning to expand their basic knowledge of the causes of spatial development and thus improve their connectivity to other spatial policy areas outside of spatial planning (e.g., economic development, transport policy). Finally, the program is aimed at bachelor's degree graduates in mobility or transportation studies who want to expand their technical knowledge to include socioeconomic issues surrounding new forms of mobility and spatial social trends.

Students combine two of the three content pillars—economic geography, mobility, and spatial development policy—to form their personal study focus:

  • “Economics and Mobility” (Wirtschaft und Mobilität) (WIMO) or
  • Economics and Spatial Development Policy” (Wirtschaft und Raumentwicklungspolitik) (WIRE) or
  • “Mobility and Spatial Development Policy” (Mobilität und Raumentwicklungspolitik) (MORE).

The program has an international focus (it includes, among other things, a semester abroad) and systematically integrates institutions and lecturers from the field into teaching.

Successful completion of the program in Economic Geography, Mobility, and Spatial Development Policy prepares you for entry into international job markets in geography and related disciplines, while also laying the foundation for possible further academic qualification in the form of doctoral studies.
