The LOEWE priority program GreenDairy develops innovative crop-livestock systems which are both ecologically and economically sustainable, enable a high level of animal welfare and are widely accepted in society. In particular, GreenDairy investigates the impact of two intensity levels of organic dairy production systems linked to the value chains milk, meat and plant-based human food. Cattle farming in a mixed farming system (livestock and crop production) is considered as one of the possible solutions for closing the disconnected material and nutrient cycles in agriculture.

Yet there is a lack of knowledge about the effects of different levels of intensity of such production systems on ecology, economy and animal welfare. GreenDairy aims at closing this knowledge gap through comparative farming systems research, where the Research Farm Gladbacherhof with the state of the art organic dairy unit provides the experimental basis for that.
