Law Module

The experimental animal law module is aimed at people working in animal experimentation at JLU Giessen, such as doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, experiment supervisors and people who need to familiarize themselves with the legal basis for carrying out procedures on animals, and serves as a basic module for all other experimental animal science courses we offer.

The module deals with European animal welfare regulations and their implementation in and significance for national legislation. It also discusses the historical development of the concept of animal welfare, the importance of animal welfare in the EU and in Europe and the history of laboratory animal science. The module discusses replacement and supplementary methods to animal experiments based on the 3R concept of Russell and Burch (Refinement, Replacement, Reduction) and explains the identification and evaluation of stress in animal experiments as well as ways of reducing stress. The basics of animal ethics and the ethical justifiability of animal experiments are taught to course participants, as are the approval procedures for authorities and the areas of responsibility and competencies involved in animal experiments.

The content of this module course is based on the requirements of the EU Animal Welfare Directive (Directive 2010/63/EU) and is aimed at persons who will carry out activities in accordance with Art. 23(2) of the Directive (performing procedures on animals).

The laboratory animal science legal module in German can be completed either as part of a German laboratory animal science course or in a separate online course on Ilias. A JLU e-mail address or user ID is required for this.

The legal module in English can be completed as part of a laboratory animal science course.

The content of the laboratory animal science law module is assessed by a written exam (1h) in presence.
