Laboratory Animal Science Courses
Background
The courses on laboratory animal science are offered by the Chair of Laboratory Animal Science and Animal Welfare, focusing on refinement, and by the animal welfare officers of JLU , for all individuals working experimentally with animals, both species-specific and discipline-specific. This includes animal caretakers, doctoral candidates, researchers, and principal investigators.
The legal basis for the courses is the EU-Regulation 2010/63, which is implemented into German law through the national Animal Protection and Laboratory Animal Regulation , as well as the FELASA Recommendations for the accreditation of education and training courses in Laboratory Animal Science, 2015. The courses provide the necessary expertise for performing activities in accordance with Article 23(2) of the EU Directive 2010/63 (conducting procedures on animals).
The courses are sequential and can be chosen and combined based on specific areas of activity.
Course Structure
The courses in laboratory animal science are offered as species-specific intensive courses (1 week/40 hours) in both German and English.
The law module on laboratory animal science forms the foundation for all courses and must be attended in every case. The content of this legal module is assessed through an in-person exam (1 hour).
The species-specific theory modules serve as advanced courses and can be taken according to the animal species required. They aim to provide knowledge of anatomical and physiological aspects and also cover the behavior and diseases of the animals. In addition, a theoretical overview of methods in animal experimental work and specific 3R strategies is provided.
Upon completion of these species-specific theory modules, the corresponding species-specific practical modules are attended.
The species-specific practical modules include, among other things, behavioral observations as well as handling and application exercises.
