The Rudolf Buchheim Institute of Pharmacology is a long-standing institution at the medical faculty of the university of Giessen with an old and changeful history. The members of the institute teach the entire spectrum of nowadays drugs which are applied to humans. This includes basic knowledge of the compounds, their proposed mechanisms of actions up to the disease-centred clinical application according to evidence-based guide lines. Since 2007 research mainly covers immunopharmacology with a focus on molecular mechanisms of inflammatory cell reactions. Our laboratory uses a broad spectrum of carefully established molecular techniques to study signaling processes from the plasma membrane down to the nucleus at the level of chromatin. Our aim is to achieve a better understanding of inflammatory signaling networks and their physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of regulation. We believe that basic pharmacological science of this kind is instrumental for the identification of innovative new targets for anti-inflammatory drugs. In both, teaching and research, we have multiple local, regional and international interactions with other teachers and research colleagues. Another major goal for all of us is to train young scientists at all levels (electives, bachelor, master, phD, MD) in experimental basic research in our laboratory.
