Empirical studies have generated insights into the processing of fictional versus factual texts, but how readers engage with generically hybrid texts remains largely unexplored. In this talk, I synthesize theoretical frameworks from narrative theory with empirical research on textual processing to develop a model of hybrid fictional-factual reading. At the example of a small empirical project on reader responses on the social cataloguing and reviewing site “Goodreads,” I show how this resource can shed light on autofictional reading. I end with a reflection on the theoretical relevance of empirical research on hybrid fictional-factual reading for literary and reception studies as well as on the practical/societal impact of such work.
