IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS
IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS – 3R Skills Lab at Justus Liebig University Giessen
The primary goal of the Giessen 3R-Skills Lab "IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS" is to raise awareness among both future and currently active individuals in animal-based research about the 3R principles. Early engagement with models is intended to foster a willingness to critically reconsider the use of animal models. A process-oriented didactic approach is employed, aiming to strengthen each participant's learning steps within a competency-oriented learning environment. This approach allows participants to constructively deal with mistakes and learning obstacles. Practice phases and methodological training can be largely customized to ensure a high degree of independence and self-initiative. Tutors act as learning advisors, and the processes support competency acquisition and ongoing reflection in various work processes.
Knowledge and skills are imparted through station-based work. Each station is equipped with computer-based workstations and supplemented with whiteboards as needed. The use and provision of digital media play a significant role in the teaching process. The goal is to further integrate digital media into didactic workflows. Teaching videos will be offered to support the learning of theoretical content and practical skills. Additionally, simulators are considered in the development of learning stations, resulting in a balanced mix of tactile, visual, and auditory elements to address and engage different learning styles.
Students work through the learning stations in small groups of four using the Self-Directed Learning method. This means that students are expected to work independently on the stations with the provided learning materials within their group. A mentor is available for questions.
The learning stations cover all three Rs. There are stations focusing on Replacement strategies, including evaluating alternative methods for addressing specific biomedical questions. This also involves learning how to conduct targeted research. The Reduction field addresses measures that visibly contribute to reducing the number of animals used in research, including the intensification of in silico strategies and the functionality of complex organoids. The Refinement aspect deals with measures to improve the respectful and considerate treatment of animals (models). This learning field emphasizes understanding complex sensory experiences and assessing stress, as well as identifying suitable components and parameters to enhance or maintain animal welfare.
