Access to generative AI / large language models for JLU members

JLU aiChat is a platform where you as a member of JLU have access to generative AI / large language models. The interface makes it possible to do various tasks such as generate, analyze, and translate texts. For users it is necessary to create an account; your JLU user ID is enough for logging in—no personal data is stored.

The AI team in the IT Service Center of Justus Liebig University Giessen has made this offer available in order to give all associates of the university the possibility to gain experience integrating generative artificial intelligence into their work processes and to create a place to become familiar with it so that new ways of working can be discovered and an internal discussion on implementing AI can come about.

Information on the use of external AI services such as Microsoft Copilot

With regard to information security and data protection, we currently advise against the use of AI services in an official context that are not provided by JLU or procured by JLU in accordance with data protection regulations. These external services include, for example, Microsoft Copilot as well as apps or websites from providers such as OpenAI (Chatgpt), DeepL (DeepL Translate / Write), DeepSeek (R1), Perplexity Ai and others. In Microsoft products, the Copilot AI service is integrated and activated for MS365 users and the University Computer Center (HRZ) cannot deactivate all functionalities due to the provider. You may encounter Copilot in the Edge browser or in Office programs, for example. We are therefore dependent on your careful use of it.
It is currently unclear whether and how such AI services can be used in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and university confidentiality obligations. Should this assessment change, we will inform you accordingly.

We recommend using JLU aiChat, which is GDPR-compliant and also allows the input of personal or sensitive or confidential data in the “ai@JLU” area. This allows you to communicate and work securely and in compliance with data protection regulations. Even externally operated language models such as the GPT-4o or DeepSeek R1 used in ChatGPT can be used securely and in compliance with the GDPR via JLU aiChat for a variety of use cases due to special contractual regulations - just not for entering personal or confidential data. For the processing of sensitive data, the HRZ offers you comparably powerful and secure open source models operated on JLU servers. Further information can be found in our FAQ.
