Who is eligible?
The following departments from Faculties 07 and 08 are eligible for the license (free of charge):
- Physics (FB 07)
- Materials Science (FB 07)
- Chemistry (FB 08)
- Biology (FB 08)
- Food Chemistry (FB 08)
How do I get a license?
To purchase a license, both eligible employees and students should contact HRZ license management.
Please send an e-mail to HRZ license management or use the application form provided.
How long is a license valid?
The right of use is limited in time and expires every year on October 31. The licenses must be renewed after expiry.
Since October 2017, the manufacturer has introduced a new procedure that makes it possible to activate the software for the new license period using the product key from the previous license period. If you no longer have your product key available, you can view it in your Origin account. To do this, log in to http://originlab.com with your university email address.
Click on the menu item 'Manage my license(s)' and then on the serial number SF8T5-6089-*******. There you will find your product key.
(Attention: The serial number is not your product key. Your key is 16 characters long and consists of numbers and capital letters.)
- Then start Origin.
- In the 'Help' menu, click on 'Activate license' and then on the license button.
- Use the same product key as last year to activate (= renew) your license.
- After entering the license key, click on 'Activate'.
The current framework agreement runs until October 30, 2024.
What is the difference between 'serial number' and 'product key'?
The serial number is a unique number of the manufacturer Originlab for Origin use by the University of Giessen. It includes all product keys generated and used under this serial number.
The product key is relevant for users. This is generated exclusively for each user and is used for product activation.
Which product versions are available?
The latest product version is always available as part of the license agreement. As soon as the manufacturer makes this available as part of the license agreement, the version is also offered for download here.
Can I run older Origin versions in parallel?
Yes, you can run previous Origin versions in parallel. However, these software versions will display an update notice.
For which operating systems is Origin available?
Origin is only available for Windows systems. You can find more information here.
How and where do I get the installation files?
Download via the HRZ website
The download information is available on request from HRZ license management if you belong to the group of authorized persons.
Please send an e-mail to HRZ license management or use the application form provided.
Download via the Originlab manufacturer portal
If you are authorized, you can also download the installation files from the website of the manufacturer Originlab. This requires an account, which authorized persons receive via the HRZ. In this case, you will find the installation files for the latest product version in your Originlab account under 'Downloads > Origin Current Version Installer'.
Can I install Origin on multiple computers?
As an employee, you can install Origin on a work computer.
The home use option also allows private, non-commercial use by authorized users.
Is there a trial version?
The manufacturer Originlab offers a 21-day trial version. This requires online registration, which you can find here.
If you only want to open and view Origin files and not edit them, you can use the manufacturer's free Origin Viewer.
Can I also use Origin as a network license?
Yes, the HRZ operates a license server. The PC on which Origin is to be used must be connected to the University of Giessen's data network. The licese server must authorize the IP address of the PC.

Are there public PC workstations with Origin at JLU?
No.
For what purposes can I use Origin?
The use is permitted exclusively in a non-commercial context and exclusively for the fulfillment of the legal tasks of the universities (usually in research, teaching, studies, promotion of young scientists, knowledge transfer).
