Windows 10 end of support

Microsoft's support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025, after which time no more security updates will be made available. Please plan your switch to the successor product Windows 11 in good time.

Microsoft will discontinue support for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. From this date, there will no longer be any security updates for Windows 10. Without updates, security gaps will remain open that could make affected systems easy prey for attackers. Therefore, devices with Windows 10 may no longer be operated on the network after 14 October 2025.

We recommend that all JLU staff and facilities plan and implement the switch from Windows 10 to the successor product Windows 11 in good time.

Since mid-March 2024, the HRZ shop has been delivering all Windows computers ordered with Windows 11 installed as standard.

Can an existing Windows 10 computer be upgraded to Windows 11?

Windows 11 places higher demands on the hardware than Windows 10. For example, computers with older CPUs that do not have certain security features are not supported and the computer must have a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 installed.

All business Dell computers that have been procured via the HRZ shop since March 2019 are Windows 11-capable.

To check whether an older computer is suitable for Windows 11, we recommend the free tool "WhyNotWin11". It is available from Heise-Verlag at the following link:

https://www.heise.de/download/product/WhyNotWin11

If the tool does not recognise a TPM, please check in the BIOS settings whether the TPM module is activated. You will find the setting for Dell devices under "Security".

If an existing computer is not Windows 11-capable, it must be replaced by a Windows 11 device by the end of October 2025 at the latest or may only be operated offline (without a connection to the network) and with additional security precautions. Suitable computers for business use are available from the HRZ shop in JustOS.

The installation assistant provided by Microsoft can be used to upgrade a Windows 11-capable computer that you administer yourself from Windows 10 to Windows 11:

What else do I need to consider when upgrading to Windows 11?

Upgrading a computer properly licensed with Windows 10 to Windows 11 is free of charge. No separate upgrade licence is required for this. All Windows computers that have been procured via the HRZ shop are duly licensed with Windows 10. For computers procured elsewhere, it is essential to ensure that a valid Windows 10 licence is available.

What support is available for upgrading existing computers to Windows 11?

There is currently no concrete offer from the HRZ for this. Information on this will be published on this page at a later date.
