Cambridge Business English Certificate
This external certificate requires proficiency in English at the level of a so-called "independent user" (B1) according to the European Framework of Reference for Language Learning and Teaching (CEF). Examinations for the Cambridge BEC Preliminary can be taken in Giessen (e.g., they are offered by Kreisvolkshochschule Lich). Compared with alternative Business English certificates, the Cambridge BEC Preliminary offers:
- a compulsory oral examination,
- a good selection of high-quality self-study materials (also available on loan from the departmental library),
- the convenience of being able to take preparatory courses and examinations in Giessen, and
- the additional benefit of a well-known brand name.
Moreover, this certificate requires but a modest investment of time and money. The examination fee is approximately EUR 100, and most students should be able to pass the BEC Preliminary examination if they supplement their school English with self-study exercises. Even for those students whose English is rather weak, attending one to two preparatory courses at a cost of some EUR 80 each should allow them to pass the examination. Preparatory courses are also available through Kreisvolkshochschule Lich, for example.

The BCB certificate can be taken at our department and is equivalent to the Cambridge BEC Preliminary in the sense that it requires a similar level of English-language proficiency. This certificate is issued to students who have successfully completed a three-hour "Business Communication Basics" module. Three such BCB courses are taught at our department every semester, and students can either have them count towards the English-language requirement or as a free elective module.
