Overview of the BiGi service center Giessen
The dramatic drop in consumer costs for DNA sequencing is revolutionizing genomics research in general, and specifically in the field of biotechnology and medicine. DNA sequencing of microbial genomes and metagenomes of their habitats is generating data at a hitherto unforeseen pace. The real bottleneck that prevents realization of the full potential of the different -omics technologies is not the data generation itself, but the subsequent data analysis.
To address this looming bottleneck, the BiGi Bioinformatics Resource Center combines bioinformatics expertise and facilities at Bielefeld and Gießen Universities as required in the field of microbial genome research.
The group at the Justus-Liebig-University in Gießen provides high-performance computing services supporting three levels of user competence and a repository of reusable workflows suitable also for cloud computing.
We also offer access to software tools for large-scale genome analysis, comparative genomics and metagenome data exploration.
As part of de.NBI, we contribute to standardization efforts for data interchangeability and software interoperability. Finally, we provide support and user training to the life science community. One of the first larger de.NBI events was the first de.NBI Summer School organized at the JLU in 2015.
