Expertise

As senior lecturer and scientist, I joined the group of Agronomy and Crop Sciences in 2003. My working fields covered supervision of labour analysis for students and scientists who conducted chemical analysis of plant and soil samples, supervision of students who do thesis for bachelor or master degrees and teaching courses for bachelor and master students.

As lab leader, I supervise chemical analysis of plant samples derived from different experiments focusing the quality of agricultural products such as bread wheat, sugar beet, potatoes, as well as oil seeds. The parameters important for backing quality of wheat like falling number, gluten index, amylographs and sedimentation values were analysed. Quality analysis of oil seeds focused on the measurement of oil content, acid number, peroxide number and composition of fat acids.

In addition, a specific interest was in the analysis of the quality-relevant substances of medicinal and spicy plants such as artichoke, oregano and mint. The phenolic compounds like phenolic acids, flavonoids were analysed. Essential oil content of plants and the compositions of essential oils were analysed.

Soil analysis focused on the carbon and nitrogen dynamics as well as cation exchange capacity of arable soils in long-term field experiments that were treated with different fertilizers, crop rotations, crop residue managements and soil tillage methods.

I taught one bachelor course with name of “ecological aspects of plant production” (Produktionsökologie BP31) that was visited mainly by students who study agricultural science or environment management. I taught one master course with name of “quality evaluation of plant food products” (Qualitätssicherung und –beurteilung pflanzlicher Nahrungsrohstoffe, MK86) that was visited mainly by students who study agricultural sciences, nutrition sciences, and beverage technology. My expertise in research includes (1) adaptation mechanisms of crop plants to abiotic stresses such as phosphor deficiency, low pH, saline stress, ammonium toxicity; (2) nitrogen fixation by legume plants; (3) proton homeostasis in plant and soil systems under arable conditions.
