Research Associate (m/f/d)

in the field of Battery Research

The position is part of third-party funded project: "SiMba – Simulation, Microstructure Analysis, and Optimization of Solid-State Batteries” of the Junior Research Group of Dr. Anja Bielefeld at the Center for Materials Research. The position is to be filled until May 31st, 2027. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).

The SiMba project aims to bring solid-state batteries closer to practical applications by advancing the understanding of their underlying electro-chemo-mechanical processes and optimizing their performance. In this context, you investigate structured lithium anodes or porous reservoirs for lithium plating through microstructure-resolved electro-chemo-mechanical simulations using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Therein, the cell breathing is studied as well as mechanical stresses that arise upon cycling and aging. The underlying microstructure models are created digitally.

Your tasks at a glance

  • Development of electro-chemo-mechanical microstructure-resolved models and simulations for structured lithium anodes and porous reservoirs in solid-state batteries
  • Analysis of the distribution of mechanical stress within the electrodes
  • Development of electrode design guidelines and cycling conditions for lithium metal anodes
  • Supervision of student projects
  • Preparation of scientific publications, participation in (inter)national conferences and project meetings
  • Collaboration with partners from the automotive and battery industries

Your qualifications and competences

  • Completed academic university degree in chemistry, physics, computer science, data science or materials science (M.Sc., diploma, first state examination or equivalent degree)
  • Prior knowledge in the fields of electrochemical energy storage or simulations using Finite Element Method (FEM) or Discrete Element Method (DEM)
  • Experience with investigations of ion transport and interfacial properties of solid-state batteries is desirable
  • Advanced programming skills (Python, C++, Matlab, or similar) and knowledge of data analysis methods
  • Very good knowledge of English and very good communication skills are imperative
  • Interest in interdisciplinary approaches

Our offer to you

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of experiment and simulation in the growing field of solid-state batteries
  • A varied job with flexible working hours
  • Free use of local public transport (LandesTicket Hessen)
  • More than 100 training seminars, workshops and e-learning opportunities per year for personal development, as well as a wide range of health and sports activities
  • Remuneration according to TV-H, company pension scheme, child allowance and special payments
  • Good compatibility of family and career (certificate "audit familiengerechte hochschule")

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Anja Bielefeld by e-mail (anja.bielefeld@pc.jlug.de).

JLU aims to employ more women in academic research. We therefore particularly encourage female candidates to apply. JLU is regarded as a family-friendly university. Applicants with children are very welcome. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
