Research Associate (m/f/d) in the field of Battery Research
Founded in 1607, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is a research university rich in tradition. Inspired by curiosity about the unknown, we enable around 26,500 students and 5,700 employees to advance science for society. Join us in breaking new ground and writing success stories - your own and those of our university.
Support us from June 1st, 2024, in full-time as a
Research Associate (m/f/d)
in the field of Battery Research
The position is part of third-party funded project: "SiMba – Simulation, Microstructure Analysis, and Optimization of Solid-State Batteries” of the Junior Research Group of Dr. Anja Bielefeld at the Center for Materials Research. The position is to be filled until May 31st, 2027. The salary is in accordance with the collective labour agreement of the State of Hessen (E 13 TV-H).
The SiMba-project aims to advance the application of solid-state batteries by enhancing the understanding of their underlying electro-chemo-mechanical processes and optimizing their performance for practical applications. In this context, you will establish a foundation for microstructure-resolved simulations of electro-chemo-mechanical processes through high-resolution, high-contrast focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) cross-sections and tomographies.
Your tasks at a glance
- Reconstruction of 3-dimensional microstructure models from FIB-SEM data
- Image processing and analysis, as well as the development of a pore and particle identification algorithm for SEM data using deep learning methods
- Electrochemical characterization of solid-state battery electrodes and cells
- Microstructure analysis and development of microstructure-descriptive parameters for comparing different electrode composites and for use in simulation models with reduced computational effort
- Creation of scientific publications, participation in (inter)national conferences and project meetings
- Collaboration with partners from the automotive and battery industries
Your qualifications and competences
- Completed academic university degree in chemistry, physics, informatics, data science or materials science (M.Sc., diploma, first state examination or equivalent degree)
- Completed PhD in chemistry, physics, informatics, data science or materials science
- Background knowledge in the fields of electrochemical energy storage or imaging techniques with (sub-)micrometer range
- Experience with imaging and electrochemical investigations of battery components and/or cells is desirable
- Advanced programming skills (Python, C++, Matlab, or similar) and knowledge of data analysis methods
- Very good knowledge of English and very good communication skills are imperative
- Interest in interdisciplinary approaches
Our offer to you
- Interdisciplinary research at the interface of experiment and simulation in the growing field of solid-state batteries
- A varied job with flexible working hours
- Free use of local public transport (LandesTicket Hessen)
- More than 100 training seminars, workshops and e-learning opportunities per year for personal development, as well as a wide range of health and sports activities
- Remuneration according to TV-H, company pension scheme, child allowance and special payments
- Good compatibility of family and career (certificate "audit familiengerechte hochschule")
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Anja Bielefeld by e-mail (anja.bielefeld@pc.jlug.de).
