Q&A
Thesis-related Questions
At the ICB Chair, only Prof. Dr. Xun Luo is authorized to supervise theses.
You may choose whether to write your BA thesis at the ICB Chair or within your specialization. Please note, however, that examiners can only supervise a limited number of students and may have different procedures regarding contact, topic assignment, and approval.
Internship-related Questions
The internship module is offered every semester, so you may complete it earlier if it better fits your schedule. Ideally, the internship "Übung" should be completed as early as possible, and the internship itself should preferably be completed before your study abroad semester. However, it is also possible to complete the internship during your stay abroad.
In general, it is preferred that the internship is completed as a continuous block, as most companies favour uninterrupted periods for meaningful engagement. However, it is possible to complete the internship on a part-time basis over a longer period, provided the total required number of hours is fulfilled.
There is flexibility regarding the interval between the preparatory course (block seminar) and the internship. For both the Examination Office and the ICB Chair, it is not relevant whether the module is completed within a single semester or spread over a longer period (e.g., one year).
We strongly recommend completing the internship module before registering for your Bachelor’s thesis.
- BA: The internship should last at least 8 weeks with a minimum of 35 working hours per week (full-time), totalling at least 270 hours.
- MA: The internship should last at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 38 working hours per week (full-time), totalling at least 456 hours.
- BA: 8–10 pages.
- MA: Approximately 20 pages.
The internship report must be submitted via ILIAS. Please note that the report must answer specific questions, which you can download from the "3. Praktikumsbericht" section in the ILIAS exercise unit.
Yes, working student positions can be recognized upon application.
- Application: Use the same form used for standard internship registration, available on ILIAS. You can access all materials via the course “BA and MA Intercultural Communication and Business”.
- Process: On ILIAS, please navigate to the folder “Praktikum Bachelor ICB” or “Praktikum Master ICB” (depending on your degree program . Within this folder, locate the subfolder “1. Praktikumsanmeldung” . There, you will find the registration form along with detailed instructions. The completed internship registration must also be uploaded in this same location.
- Approval: After review by the ICB Chair, your status will be updated to “Bestanden” (Passed) in ILIAS if approved.
- Proof: Once approved, proceed to “2. Praktikumsnachweis Arbeitgeber”. Download the form, have it completed by your employer, and upload it. Finally, submit your report under “3. Praktikumsbericht”.
- Finalization: The ICB Chair evaluates the module (pass/fail). If activities are insufficient, the coordinator may impose additional requirements or request a revision of the report. Results are recorded in ILIAS and forwarded to the Examination Office for entry into FlexNow.
Note: For BA students, participation in the internship "Übung" remains mandatory.
Yes, HiWi positions can generally be recognized in the MA ICB program, provided that the total working hours can be properly documented and the tasks have a clear connection to the professional fields of the Bachelor’s or Master’s program (e.g., applied/research areas in economics, communication, cultural studies, linguistics, or literary studies).
Yes. Participation in the internship "Übung" is mandatory as part of the BA ICB program, even if your working student job has been recognized.
We cannot issue a certificate stating that the internship is "mandatory." However, we can provide a confirmation that the internship is an integral part of your study program. Please contact the ICB coordinators regarding this.
Yes, provided that you have officially chosen to replace your second business foreign language with an internship. In this case, the internship becomes a mandatory component of your study program, and a corresponding confirmation can be issued by the ICB coordinators.
Yes, it is generally possible to complete the required hours over a longer period, as long as the total required hours for the module are reached by the end.
Ideally, this decision should be made as early as possible, though it can be made later in your studies.
You cannot register via FlexNow for this option. Instead, please upload the required documents directly to ILIAS. The ICB Chair will then forward the relevant information to the Examination Office.
