FAQ Supplementary Certificate

Frequently Asked Questions regarding the Supplementary Certificate DigitalCompetencePlus and its courses

How do I register for the Supplementary Certificate?

Simply send an email to the certificate coordination. After that, you will be added to a Stud.IP group, where all further information and materials will be available for you. Even if you have already started relevant courses, registration is still possible.

Can I receive a grade for the Supplementary Certificate?

If you need an overall grade for the Supplementary Certificate — for instance, to include it as a profile module in your degree program—let us know at the time of registration. Once you have fully completed the Supplementary Certificate, we will issue you an overall grade.

Can I also receive a grade for individual courses or events within DigiKomp+?

For the Fundamentals Section and all courses offered directly by the ZfbK, you can easily obtain a grade upon completing a course. For courses from other institutions, the respective instructors decide on grading. On the overview page of the Applied and Advanced Courses you can see which course is offered by which JLU division. Please ask your instructors at the start of the course that you need a grade, and let them know. If you encounter difficulties, feel free to contact our certificate coordination.

What timeframe should I plan for the Supplementary Certificate?

Check the course descriptions, as some courses are offered seasonally. Ideally, two semesters are recommended to complete it. But there's no rush: you can work on the certificate over multiple semesters. If you want to include the Supplementary Certificate in your degree program — e.g., as a Profile Module — please consult the examination regulations of your faculty first.

How long can I take for the Supplementary Certificate?

You can take as much time as you want; you don’t have to finish after a certain period. The prerequisite is that you are enrolled at the JLU. The same applies in that you can finish as quickly as you want, or as the offered courses allow.

Can I also have courses credited in the Supplementary Certificate after completing them in previous semesters that appear in the course archive?

You can do this at any time by sending an email at the certificate coordination in which you attach the course records.

Can I also have courses credited in the Supplementary Certificate that do not appear in the course archive?

If you think a course you have taken fits into our offer, you can inquire at any time with the certificate coordination whether it can be credited toward the supplementary certificate. To do so, simply send an email with the course schedule or a list of the topics.

How do I get the Supplementary Certificate document issued?

Once you have accumulated enough CP, uploaded your Portfolio to Stud.IP, and completed the colloquium, you can submit your application for the Supplementary Certificate. The application form and all instructions are available in the Stud.IP group.

Do I need to submit physical copies of my course records?

We aim to keep the process as digital as possible. All necessary steps — including the submission of your course records — can be handled via Stud.IP or via email.

Where and when will I receive my Supplementary Certificate document?

After you send us your application, we will process it. Preparing the document may take several weeks, so please be patient. You will receive a notification once your Supplementary Certificate is ready for pickup.

Am I allowed to do the Applied and Advanced Courses before the Fundamentals Section?

It is recommended that you complete the Fundamentals Section before the Applied and Advanced Courses, as you will receive a comprehensive overview of the courses of the Supplementary Certificate there. If it is, however, more convenient time-wise to do the Applied and Advanced Courses first, that is of course possible – they will be credited to you either way.

Is there a attendance requirement in the Fundamentals Section?

There is no attendance requirement, except for the first session. All subsequent sessions can be followed either synchronously via BBB or asynchronously through an e-learning module. However, there is a group project for which sychronous meetings are strongy recommended. Please note that the Fundamentals Section is currently only available in German. If you would like to attend the course in english, please get in contact with the certificate coordination.

Do I need to register for the Applied and Advanced Courses though Stud.IP?

For every course listed on our website, there is a link you can follow. This link will take you to the registration page. Typically, registration is done via Stud.IP or by email. Most Applied and Advanced Courses are offered by the HRZ or the university library. For the HRZ courses, registration via Stud.IP is required. In the case of library offerings as part of the seminar "Informations- und Datenmanagement" registration is generally not required, but is strongly recommended. This way you can download the lecture materials. The event is also conducted in a hybrid format (both in person and online), so you will receive a Zoom link for online participation and will have access to the recording after the event.

Can I receive support if I have questions?

Absolutely! We’re available to assist you at any time. Visit us at the Zentrum für fremdsprachliche und berufsfeldorientierte Kompetenzen (ZfbK), Abteilung Schlüsselkompetenzen, Rathenaustraße 10 (Raum 406), 35392 Gießen, or write us an email. We’re happy to help you.
