Notes for Acrobat Professional users

I only use Acrobat Professional and not the Adobe Creative Cloud products. Am I also affected?

People who (only) use an Acrobat Professional version and have purchased it via JustOS or this Asknet page have a purchase license with no expiration date. This version can be used indefinitely. These installations do not show a license expiration message. If you do not wish to use any other Adobe Creative Cloud products such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, etc., you are not affected by this. Adobe will also remove these purchased versions from the market in the future. However, existing installations will not be affected by this.

License form A: personal licenses / named user licenses

Where can I purchase a personal license?

You can find the new Adobe licenses in the JLU online shop (JustOS). It is best to search for 'Adobe Creative Cloud' in the quick search and select the named user license / personal license. Please remember to enter the name and university e-mail address of the person who will use the license when you add the product to your shopping cart.

I have purchased a personal license in JustOS. What happens next?

If you have purchased a 'named user license' in JustOS, the following processes are triggered. During the order process, you were asked to enter the name and university e-mail address of the person who is to use the software. This is particularly important if the person purchasing the license is not also the person using the software.

If the name and e-mail address of the person using the software are then available, HRZ license management will open an Adobe user account (an 'EnterpriseID') for this person.

This person will then receive a confirmation email from the sender 'message@adobe.com' stating that they now have access to the Adobe Creative Cloud applications. You do not need to do anything here at first. You can initially ignore the "Get started now" message in the email from Adobe. However, if you click on it, you will be asked to set a password for your Adobe account.

In the next step, you have the choice between self-installation or assistance from HRZ support. HRZ support will contact you if necessary to carry out the required installation of the new Creative Cloud All Apps on your computer. Once the installation is complete, you can log in to the applications directly after the first program start (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) and use the software. To log in, please use the e-mail address to which the aforementioned confirmation e-mail from Adobe was sent and the password you set yourself.

Please understand that there may be delays in installation, especially in the first days and weeks after the new Adobe licenses have been made available. HRZ support will successively process all orders.

Can I continue to purchase individual products from the Creative Cloud Suite?

Unfortunately not. With the new 2019 framework agreement, Adobe has discontinued the sale of single product licenses. You can now only purchase the 'Creative Cloud All Apps'. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. are now only available as a package.

If you are looking for Acrobat Professional DC, this is still available as a purchase version in JustOS. To do this, search for 'Adobe Acrobat Professional' in the quick search in JustOS.

Can I use my personal license on multiple devices?

Yes, you can use the license on as many devices as you have in use. Adobe products can be installed on all of these devices. However, they cannot be used on several devices at the same time in parallel operation. The licenses are tied to you personally, i.e. to your Adobe user account.

Is the purchased license bound to one person for the entire term?

No, if the person no longer needs the license in the course of the three years because the tasks have changed, the person has left JLU Giessen, etc., then the license can be transferred to another person. To do this, please contact the HRZ license management (software-manage) and name the current and new licensee.

I have an existing serial number-based Creative Cloud license. Can I replace it with the new personal license without reinstalling?

We generally recommend uninstalling the previous products before installing the current programs. Experience has shown that rudiments of the old installation remain when 'installing over'. We recommend using a special uninstall package that can be downloaded here.

Can one person have several personal licenses assigned at the same time?

This option makes no sense in terms of the basic principle of the license form. One person cannot work on several devices at the same time. In this respect, the license-person assignment is a 1:1 assignment. Several people who want to use the Adobe Creative Cloud software all need their own personal license.

If you are dealing with pool or laboratory computers on which changing persons are to work within the framework of a device-bound license, then this is a 'shared device license'. Please refer to the further questions further down in the text.

What is an EnterpriseID?

'EnterpriseID' is the name for a user account at Adobe to which a personal license can be linked. It essentially consists of the (fully qualified) university e-mail address (vorname.nachname@einrichtung.uni-giessen.de) of the person who wishes to use a license. The EnterpriseID is comparable to the AdobeID known to Adobe users. The main difference is that an AdobeID is a personal identifier and is owned by the private individual and the EnterpriseID is an official identifier owned by the educational institution.

How long are the passwords for my Adobe user account (EnterpriseID) valid?

The current security settings stipulate that your password must be changed every 90 days. You will receive a system message from Adobe asking you to change your password.

Are personal licenses also available for students?

No, personal licenses can only be purchased and used by employees of JLU Giessen.  Students can use Adobe products on JLU Giessen pool devices as part of shared device licensing. Please read more about this under 'device-bound licenses / shared device licensing'.

License form B: device-bound licenses / shared device licensing

I would like to purchase and install licenses for a PC pool. What do I have to do?

Adobe has introduced shared device licensing for PC pools. This form of licensing is a hybrid of device and person-based licensing. For licensing purposes, the number of devices is counted and not the number of people using them.

For example, if you have a PC room for courses or several laboratory workstations with several devices and changing users, then you need this form of licensing.

To purchase, first search for 'Adobe Creative Cloud' in the quick search in JustOS. Please select the item '... Shared Device License (device-bound license for PC pools)'.

You will need one license for each workstation you want to equip with this, e.g. 10 licenses if you want to equip a PC room with 10 devices.

Once you have purchased the license, you will receive a special installation medium from the HRZ that you can install on the pool computers in consultation with HRZ support. The devices are then ready for use. However, users also need an Adobe user account to log in to the Adobe applications. Please also read the following two questions and answers.

Why is a login also required for shared device licensing?

Adobe has made a login mandatory for all new license models. This initially sounds contradictory in the area of device-based licenses, as the device and not the person using it is licensed.

All users (whether students or employees) can only work on these shared devices after entering the access data of an Adobe user account. However, the person does not need an assigned license. This is anchored on the device. Therefore, it does not matter whether 2 or 20 different licenses log on to the device during the period of use.

Where do users who want to use Adobe products on PC pool computers get an Adobe ID?

Since the licenses for device-based licensing are not linked to the persons but to the devices, any AdobeID is sufficient for registration.

Each person can create an AdobeID in self-service at Adobe. If the persons who want to work with Adobe products on a 'shared device' already have an AdobeID, they can use this to register.

Each person can create an AdobeID themselves here:
