    Irene.Bertschek

  • Irene Bertschek is head of the ZEW Research Unit “Digital Economy” and professor of economics of digitalisation at Justus Liebig University Giessen. In addition, she has been a member of the Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation (EFI), advising the Federal German government, since 2019 and has served as its chair since August 2025. From 2022 to 2025, she was a member of the Federal Chancellor's Future Council. 
    After studying economics at University of Mannheim (Diplom) and Université catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (Master of Arts), with a focus on econometrics and industrial economics, Irene Bertschek completed her doctorate within the European Doctoral Program at Université catholique de Louvain. During this time she spent research visits at CREST-INSEE in Paris and at Humboldt University in Berlin. She has been working at ZEW since 1999. From 2011 to 2017 she held the Professorship for Applied Empirical Economic Research at University of Mannheim.
