  • Professorship for Cultural Sociology (Prof. Dr. Jörn Ahrens)

In the research area of cultural sociology, forms of cultural practices, phenomena and transformations from a cultural theoretical, qualitative empirical and systematic perspective are the focus of research activities. This is about a cultural sociology informed by cultural studies, which deals with questions about the interconnection of culture and society using discourse analysis,  critical  theory,  poststructuralism,  ANT  and  methods  of  qualitative  social research.

The research focuses of Prof. Dr.  Jörn Ahrens and  his team focus on the connection between  society, violence and fear; the analysis of popular culture(s); especially media such as film and comics; the performance of youth cultures; the transformation of nature and social natural relations; Questions about concepts of home and migration; Urban culture and urban society as well as studies of cultures of knowledge, epistemologies of the social and cultures of the political.

The focus of work cooperates with the International Graduate Center for the Study of Culture (GCSC) as well as with partners at home and abroad, in particular at the North-West University, South Africa, the University Fort Hare, South Africa, the University of Botswana, the Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and Columbia University, New York, USA. The research area is also involved in setting up a real-world laboratory in the city of Giessen and coordinates a DAAD- funded ISAP program with North-West University, South Africa.

Research projects

 

  • Professorship of Socialization and Education (Prof. Dr. Thomas  Brüsemeister)

At the Professorship of Socialization and Education, research examines state and civil society governance structures. The professorship is involved in the evaluation of the GAIA Café (Active Together for Intercultural Exchange), which the Faculty of Medicine runs together with the Dean of Studies in Medicine and the Turkish-German Health Foundation e.V. in order to better integrate non-native speaker students into German courses. The professorship supports the scientific continuing education course “Animal Assisted Services” in Faculty 10 – Veterinary Medicine; For this purpose, cooperation was institutionalized between departments 03 and 10. The professorship is also involved in a knowledge transfer working group, led by Apl. Prof. Dr. York Kautt.

 

  • Professorship for General Comparison of Society (Prof. Dr. Andreas Langenohl) Sociology, Focus General  Comparative Studies:

Political sociology with a focus on South Africa, the U.S., the EU, Eastern Europe and transnational relations; economic sociology and the social study of finance, i.e. economic citizenship, the security/finance nexus, and the role of economic knowledge and expertise in contemporary society; the constitution and governance of social groups, for instance, ‘diverse’ or ‘old age’; the impact of sustainability policies on processes of economic valuation and profit- making.

 

  • Professorship for Sociology with a focus on Media Sociology (representation by Apl. Prof. Dr. York Kautt)

The research area of media sociology deals with the interaction between media and society and pays particular attention to the social implications of new technologies. For example, the research deals with digital inequality, the scientificization and quantification of everyday life, epistemological questions of digitalization and communityization on the Internet.

In the research area “African Societies” we work on projects on Ethiopia, Namibia and Malawi. (Vulnerable Children in Namibia; textile industry in Ethiopia; climate issues in Malawi and Namibia).

In the “Aging Society” research area, projects on dementia, hospice work and  care  are  being carried out (dementia-friendly communities; dementia in the neighborhood; voluntary end-of- life  care;  care concepts).
