Abstract:
Uniform lattices in locally compact groups give rise to periodic tilings with compact tiles, and general lattices give rise to periodic tilings with (possibly non-compact) finite-volume tiles. Approximate lattices were introduced by Michael Björklund and myself to have a similar algebraic model for aperiodic tilings like the famous Penrose tiling and its hyperbolic analogs.
In this talk I will introduce approximate lattice and discuss their similarities with and differences from actual lattices. A particular focus will be on the hull dynamical systems of approximate lattices. No previous knowledge about approximate groups or aperiodic order will be assumed.
