Founded in 1607 by Count Ludwig V. of Hesse-Darmstadt (and then called "Ludoviciana"), Giessen University is among the traditional, well-established universities in German-speaking countries . The university's eventful history has seen suspension during the Thirty Years' War, destruction in 1944 and re-establishment in 1957, when it adopted the name of renowned chemist Justus Liebig.

Today Justus Liebig University (JLU) is the second-biggest university in the federal state of Hesse. It currently has over 25,000 students. This significant student population (which is further boosted by students from the local University of Applied Sciences) effectively shapes life in Giessen: Relative to its population of 94,000, the city boasts the highest number of students anywhere in Germany . In fact, every third person you'll meet in Giessen is likely to be a student!

At JLU, eleven faculties and a comprehensive research profile offer outstanding breadth and diversity in education. For instance, JLU not only features a unique line-up of subjects such as Medical and Veterinary Sciences, Environmental Sciences, and Nutrition and Home Economics. It also provides degree programmes in a full range of academic subjects, including the Natural and Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration and Economics, as well as the Arts and Humanities. Teaching a wide variety of subjects and performing remarkably diverse research are thus the hallmarks of JLU.

Campus of Faculty 02: Economics and Business Administration

All the main facilities of our faculty are located on a single campus. Here you will find the offices of the professors, the lecture halls, the department library as well as a PC laboratory and a cafeteria. Tree-lined green areas invite you to linger and relax.

History

The origins of our department date back to 1777 . At that time, one of the first economics faculties in Germany was founded in Giessen. Today, more than 20 professors and around 100 academic staff teach and conduct research at Faculty 02 - Business and Economics. More than 2,800 students are majoring in six degree programs . In addition, there are numerous students from other faculties who study economics as a minor subject.

Branch Library Economics and Business Studies

The Branch Library Economics and Business Studies is the library of the department and part of the library system of the University of Giessen . It has an extensive collection of academic books and journals, company reports and digital media. The library offers students Internet access via wireless LAN as well as a large number of work and reading places. The latter offer students preparing for their final exams a quiet and pleasant working atmosphere.

Campus PC lab

Our Campus PC lab provides students with modern and up-to-date PC workstations. All workstations are equipped with standard software (e.g. Office and Internet browser software) as well as special applications (e.g. programming and statistics packages), which are used in various courses.

Café JuWi

Café JuWi is the faculty's centrally located cafeteria and much more than students' preferred hangout for a quick snack. In addition to its wide selection of snack foods, Café JuWi offers a daily selection of set meals from the university's canteen plus a healthy choice of salads, vegetables and fruit.

Our faculty offers one Bachelor's and three Master's degree programs. You can find information on our programs, our teaching and research specializations, and contact details at the following links (partly in German).
