The Fundamentals Section of DigitalKompetenzPlus
The Fundamentals Section offers you an intensive engagement with the competence areas “Communication and Collaboration” (K1) and “Problem Solving Skills” (K2) that you see to your right, and it also provides insights into the other three competence areas. Completing the Fundamentals Section earns you 3 CPs and lays the foundations for developing your digital competences. Afterwards you are free to choose your own combination from the full range of digital competence courses .

What does the Fundamentals Section offer you?
- Fundamental understanding: Here you acquire the foundation of digital competences. You explore the core aspects of the digital world – from communication and collaboration to digital problem solving skills.
- Practical application: Learning means doing. Therefore, you won’t just learn concepts; you’ll apply them directly in team projects. Here you can experiment, design, and collaboratively create digital content.
- Teamwork experience: You’re not alone. Together with other students, you work on projects that enhance not only your digital skills but also your teamwork abilities.
- Personal portfolio: Your progress, your achievements – capture them in a portfolio that not only documents your learning process but also allows you to analyze and evaluate your personal development.

Content of the Fundamentals Section
The Fundamentals Section (3 CP) gives you a fundamental understanding of the digital world and acts as a guide. Topics such as social media, AI, and digital security are discussed, along with their benefits and challenges. Attendance is mandatory for the first session of the foundations section, which takes place synchronously online. This also serves to form groups for the parallel project work. The following seven sessions are held synchronously but do not require attendance and are also available asynchronously.
A team based project work is designed to apply the learned competences. In a team you jointly create a wiki page or work on a similar project, thereby gaining project management experience in both content and time planning as well as in joint implementation. You also learn to give each other feedback on your work. You can then mention this project in your résumé, setting you apart from others.
You reflect on the lecture content every week, and parallel to that you track the progress and collaboration of your project team in a portfolio that you submit to the instructor after the course. This also gives you the opportunity to revisit your development in the Fundamentals Section, its content, and the creation of your project afterward.
