Research on Options of Circular Cattle farming systems |
ContextIn recent years, animal husbandry has become a central topic in debates on sustainability and environmental protection. Conventional approaches to animal husbandry are increasingly reaching their limits and require innovative solutions to meet the growing demand for animal products without harming the environment or weakening the local economy. At the same time, these approaches must be accepted and supported by society, which is why aspects such as animal health and welfare are increasingly coming into focus. In scientific discourse, there is a call for a greater focus on sufficiency, cascade utilization, and circularity to overcome the efficiency problem in animal husbandry. This is intended to reduce competition for food (between human and animal nutrition) and waste generation, as well as conserve resources, by leveraging synergies between livestock farming and food security. In this context, circular livestock farming systems are becoming increasingly important, as they have the potential to offer both ecological and socio-economic benefits. In contrast to conventional linear production models, in which resources are extracted, processed, and disposed of after use, circular systems aim to create a closed loop in which waste and byproducts are upcycled and existing resources are better utilized.
