Abstract
In this co-authored article, the authors explore the relevance of biblical exegesis, hermeneutics and literary approaches to interpretation to the practice of interfaith dialogue. Using Sheldon Pollock‘s work on philology‘s role intextual interpretation “Philology in three dimensions” as a starting point, the article discusses the relationship between exegesis, hermeneutics during the reception history of a specific text and todays’ interfaith dialogue; the usefulness of comparative hermeneutics in Judaism and Christianity and their mutually illuminating functions; the application of literary and historical interpretations to the Song of Songs; and some theological reflections on the value of all this for the future of Jewish-Christian encounter. The aim of this article is to take Pollock’s philological text into the context of biblical hermeneutics and to figure out if and how his hermeneutical approach works for the interpretation of the Hebrew Bible in interfaith context. In the end, the authors of this article worked together on a picture of shared biblical interpretation.
