  • Diplom (MA  equivalent) 1969 in Sociology, Statistics and Philosophy of Science at the University of Mannheim. Ph.D. 1977 in Sociology and Philosophy of Science at the University of Mannheim.

  • Research Associate at the University of Mannheim 1970 – 1972. Lecturer in Sociology and Social Research at the University of Hamburg 1972 – 1979.

  • Project Director at ZUMA (now GESIS Mannheim) for the first general social survey (ALLBUS) in Germany 1979 - 1981. Professor for empirical research and methodology at the University of Giessen 1981 – 1993 and 2000 – 2008.

  •  Program Director for societal Monitoring at GESIS Mannheim 1994 - 2000. Since 2008 Professor emeritus at the University of Giessen.

  • 2011 – 2013 Codirector of the International Laboratory of Socio-Cultural Research at the State Research University Higher School of Economics(HSE) in Moscow.

  • Since 2015 Humboldt Research Fellow of the polish Foundation for basic research at the Cardinal Wysczinski University Warsaw.  

  •  Guest Professorships at the Institute of higher Studies(IHS) and University of Vienna(also in 2018), WZB Berlin(2017), University of Lodz, Utrecht(ICS), Oxford, University of Haifa, University of Tel-Aviv, University of Bergen,

  • Winning a competition in 2012 with an international team to revise the immigration module of the European Social Survey (ESS) scheduled for 2014 (with A.Heath/Oxford, E.Davidov/Zürich, E.Green/Lausanne, A.Ramos/ Lisboa)    

  • Founding member of the DFG research training school “group-related enmity” at the Universities in Bielefeld-Marburg/Giessen (DFG Graduiertenkolleg Gruppenbezogene Menschenfeindlichkeit) running from 2003-2012

  • One research grant from State Research  University Higher School of Economics together with S.Schwartz(Jerusalem/Moscow): Socio-Cultural Change in Russia. 2012 and 2013.

  • LIST Experiment in the Dutch LISS panel study in 2014 together with Matthew Creighton (University of Dublin) and Diana Zavala-Rojas (University of Barcelona Pompeu Fabre)

  • Development and implementation of a new module on attitudes and contacts with migrants and refugees in the new GESIS ACCESS Panel started in 2016.
