30.06.2023 - SDGnexus Network hosted session on SDG Trade-offs and Synergies at SDSN Kazakhstan Conference

Giessen, June 30, 2023 - The  SDGnexus  Network delegation participated in the SDSN Kazakhstan Conference on Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia, held in Astana on May 30, 2023. As part of the conference, the  SDGnexus  Network hosted an insightful session, shedding light on crucial research areas in sustainable development and practical examples of how the nexus approach is implemented.

"This session provides valuable insights into the interconnected nature of the SDGs," stated Dr. Aliya Assubayeva (Research Associate) and emphasized the Network's commitment to fostering an integrated approach to sustainable development research. During the session, Dr. Sarah Robinson (Research Associate) presented research on animal husbandry in Central Asia, focusing on its alignment with the SDGs. Prof. Dr. Jorge Gómez-Paredes (Visiting Professor) delved into the nexus and spillover effects of the SDGs in global trade. Additionally, Dr. Christoph Funk (Research Associate) shared insights on the intersection of research attention and SDGs. The engaging Q&A session allowed attendees to delve deeper into the topics and interact with the speakers.

In another session titled "Climate and Energy," Dr. Vladimir Otrachshenko (Research Associate) presented research on Energy Efficiency, Market Competition, and Quality Certification, drawing lessons from Central Asia. Dr. Iskandar Abdullaev (Visiting Professor) shared findings on Financing Climate Resilient Water Infrastructure in Central Asia in the session titled "Water, Land, Communities."

The SDSN Kazakhstan Conference took place at the Graduate School of Public Policy, Nazarbayev University. The conference comprised six-panel sessions focusing on the research priority areas of SDSN Kazakhstan: Land, Water, and Communities (SDGs 1, 2, 6, 11, 14, 15); Energy and Climate (SDGs 7, 13); and Education and Partnerships (SDGs 4, 10, 17). The conference welcomed participants both in-person and online, including representatives from SDSN Network members in Kazakhstan, universities in Central Asia, international partners, stakeholders, and local partners advocating sustainability and environmental policies.
