Giessen, 22 September 2023 - The World Meteorological Organization released the report, "United in Science 2023: Sustainable Development Edition," a comprehensive compilation of the latest advancements in weather, climate, and water-related sciences and services dedicated to sustainable development.

The report is useful for policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders worldwide. It offers critical insights into our planet's climate, emphasizing the urgency of coordinated action to meet the ambitious targets set forth by the 2030 Agenda. The report's analysis covers critical areas such as Greenhouse Gas emissions and concentrations, global climate indicators, ocean heat content, cryosphere, and extreme weather events. It also explores the intersection of these factors with key SDGs, including zero hunger (SDG 2), good health and well-being (SDG 3), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17).

To bridge the existing gaps and maximize the impact of science in sustainable development, the report provides the following recommendations:

  • Close the gaps in weather, climate, and hydrological observations and data;
  • Advance research and expand access to science, technology, and innovation;
  • Strengthen scientific capacity and skills through education and training;
  • Embrace local, contextual, and Indigenous knowledge;
  • Unite diverse stakeholders to boost the impact of science.
