Experimental Sensomotorics
“Those who want to hold on to the conviction that all living things are mere machines should abandon all hope of ever perceiving their environments” (Jakob von Uexküll, 1933) The basic research conducted in our Experimental Sensomotorics Group focuses on the interaction of motor behavior with perceptual and cognitive processes. Specific interests are in the control of hand movements with and without tools, the role of expertise in the interaction with tools and more generally the role of the sensorimotor system for higher cognitive processes, such as prediction and categorization (embodied cognition). The focus of our applied research is in the optimization of motor learning processes for sports, education and work environments. Here, a specific interest is in the roles of attention and aging processes in the acquisition of novel visuomotor transformations.
