Teaching & Research Focus

My research combines ecological modeling and empirical (i.e., monitoring and experimental) data for analyzing interactions and feedbacks among factors influencing the structures, functions, and dynamics of ecological and socio-ecological systems at multiple scales. At the Institute of Geobotany, I am coordinating empirical field studies in five East African Countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda), as well as developing agent-based models of social-ecological impacts and possible feedbacks of upscaling nature-based farming systems, in the frame of a multi-actor EU Horizon 2020 UPSCALE project: Upscaling the Benefits of Push-Pull Technology for Sustainable Agricultural Intensification in East Africa.
