Biogeography

Distribution patterns of freshwater invertebrates such as molluscs are ideally suited for research aimed at answering questions of biogeographical processes or factors determining species distributions. We are interested in endemism, biodiversity hotspots and large scale biodiversity patterns. Naturally, such kind of research requires a broad temporal and spatial framework and a wide ranging methodology. Currently, we are studying general biogeographical patterns and processes in four regions, sub-Sahara Africa, the Balkans, continental Asia (Himalaya, Tibetan Plateau), Wallacea and surrounding areas. Our approach involves both historical biogeography (employing phylogeographical techniques) and macroecological perspectives (e.g. distribution modelling).
