Jul 10, 2025 from 09:30 to 12:30 (Europe/Berlin / UTC200)
This hands-on workshop offers PhD candidates, pre- and post-doctoral researchers in cultural studies the opportunity to explore the potential of Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool for immersive learning. Participants will start with a brief technical introduction to VR headsets to ensure they feel confident and comfortable using the equipment. The core of the workshop will involve an individual exploration of the Anne Frank House VR, a compelling VR experience that recreates the historical space and narrative of Anne Frank's story.
Following the VR session, participants will engage in a guided discussion on how VR can enhance cultural studies. They will reflect on their experiences, analyse the pedagogical potential of VR in representing historical and cultural narratives, and explore its applications in research and teaching. Key topics will include the immersive nature of VR, its ability to foster empathy and deeper engagement, and the ethical considerations in using VR to portray sensitive topics. As such, this workshop is a valuable contribution for all (aspiring) teachers at the GCSC, irrespective of whether they research the topic of virtual reality in their scientific projects or not.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have a basic understanding of VR technology, insights into its transformative potential in cultural studies, and inspiration for integrating VR into their own academic work.
