"Reading Palestine" creates an academic space for a discussion on the writings and scholarly works on Palestine and Palestinian people. Through this reading group, we highlight and critically engage with scholars who have written extensively on issues concerning Palestine’s struggle for statehood, the Palestinian diaspora, and the history of Palestine before and after 1948 as well as with authors whose literature have reflected these issues. Since majority of the academic debate about Palestine has been discussed through a Western, Eurocentric lens, this reading group will implement a selection of readings from Arab and Israeli, among other, scholars, historians, writers, and journalists to ensure an academic multi-perspectivity. These scholars and writers include Edward Said, Rashid Khalidi, Saree Makdisi, Ilan Pappe, or David Lloyd, who have established a significant foundation in the field of Arab studies and Arab history, with a well-defined focus on Palestine. The group’s reading will include scholarly writings on literature, history, and social studies.
During our next meeting, we will be discussing the volume of poetry: Women of the Fertile Crescent: Modern Poetry by Arab Women, edited by Kamal Boullata and published in 1978. We invite everyone to select one or two poems they would like to discuss or read out loud but, as always, it is also perfectly fine if you wish to attend the meeting and read/ listen to the poems then and there. We do wish to focus on the poetry from Palestine and Lebanon, but other contributions are also very much welcome. (You will find that the poems in the book are conveniently grouped geographically and supplemented with short bios of the authors).
