This session will examine the deployment of nature conservation as a mechanism of exclusion and occupation. Anchored in a collective reading of the Introduction to Settling Nature: The Conservation Regime in Palestine-Israel (Irus Braverman, 2023), the discussion will interrogate the colonial genealogies of conservation practices — an ongoing concern within RA9 — while drawing on the regional perspectives foregrounded by Reading Palestine. The session will also invite consideration of how these questions relate to the present moment, acknowledging the deliberate devastation of ecosystems in Gaza as part of strategies to undermine the autonomy and survival of Palestinian communities.
