Creation of a 3D model of a toning pomegranate

The project "Museum 3D - A virtual exhibition space as a DigiLab for museums and teaching" of the Department of Classical Archaeology at the Justus Liebig University Giessen in cooperation with NIDIT aims to integrate digital technologies into the curriculum in order to better understand ancient visual culture and prepare it for the future. NIDIT is providing workstations, virtual reality headsets and the technical know-how to enable the students to transform ancient objects from the JLU's Classical antiquities collection into 3D models. The use of digital methods in archaeological work and museum education opens up new opportunities to increase student interest and engagement. In particular, 3D models allow for a deeper engagement with ancient objects than traditional static photographs. This develops the broad critical thinking skills that are essential for analysing the past and material culture. In a hands-on course, students are introduced to photogrammetry, 3D modelling and the Unity development environment. They also prepare the finished 3D models in a museum didactic way and create their own content for the virtual museum.

The results of the project will be presented in a virtual museum that can be used as an 'experimental lab' from the coming winter term. Students will be able to train in the handling of objects, experience methodological and interdisciplinary teaching formats and design exhibitions. The project presentation will take place on 22nd October 2023 at 2:00 pm in the Oberhessisches Museum in Altes Schloss, Giessen.
