17/06/2024 | NIDIT at the Learntec 2024

From 4 to 6 June, it was that time again: the "LEARNTEC" education trade fair once again invited visitors to Karlsruhe this year to find out about the latest trends in education technology, exchange ideas and experience technical innovations. Albrecht Metzler and Ramin Siegmund were there for NIDIT and recorded their impressions.

AI has fully arrived this year. While the topic was treated rather cautiously at the trade fair last year, there was no getting around it now. From "AI learning coaches", AI-generated educational trails, generative creation of 360° images, "intelligent" VR avatars and a wide variety of AI engines: AI was definitely a dominant pillar of the trade fair this year. It will be exciting to see how the topic develops over the next few years, particularly with regard to data protection and usability for educational institutions. The delina prize in the university category was won this year by Wilhelm Büchner University with WBH A[I]ssist - Dein KI-Tutor.

There was also a noticeable presence of robots this year. In addition to the dog-like robots from Boston Dynamics, for example, the robots Pepper and Nao, which are already being used in the education and healthcare sectors, were also represented. Robotic arms that provide AR-supported support for training processes were also on show.

With new technologies come new hurdles. It was therefore pleasing to see that the topic of accessibility was addressed in a number of presentations and stands this year. Under the heading of "Diklusion" (digital media and inclusion), the trade fair showed that many players are also thinking about how to remove barriers from and with digital media. The hall on schools was also interesting again, with several mini-presentations on teaching with tablets (and digital whiteboards), for example, as well as the area on New Work, where diversity was strong this time and office configurations for semi-hybrid teams were exhibited.

What we were particularly pleased about: Universities are now much more present at the LEARNTEC trade fair, both at the stands and at the specialist presentations spread throughout the halls. Examples such as the uniVERSEty network, which had several large presentations in Hall 2, show that universities have become an integral part of the education fair. Virtual 360° tours, which are designed as interactive learning centres, are also on the rise. This is a trend that can also be observed at our universities and for which we are receiving more and more enquiries from teachers and students alike.

This year's visit to LEARNTEC 2024 was once again a real summer highlight. The opportunity to try out the wide range of technologies for yourself, exchange ideas directly with representatives from education and industry and be inspired for your own educational work: No trade fair does this as well as LEARNTEC.
