31/10/2023 | Project presentation Museum 3D on 22.10.2023

On 22 October 2023, the presentation of the cooperation project "Museum 3D - A virtual exhibition space as a DigiLab for museums and teaching" by JLU's Classical Archaeology and the Lab for Innovative Teaching took place at the Oberhessisches Museum in Giessen. The project, funded by HessenHub, offers the possibility of integrating digital technologies into a teaching context. By means of the digital processing of complete or fragmentarily preserved objects and artefacts, it is possible to experience different object genres in their original context of installation and to draw direct comparisons.

As part of the "Museum 3D" project, students of classical archaeology were introduced to photogrammetry, 3D modelling and the didactic concept of the virtual exhibition. The resulting models and virtual environment are not only used to depict and interpret the past in an innovative way, but also serve as a basis for future exhibitions and teaching formats.

Last Sunday, visitors had their first opportunity to gain insights into the results of our project. Guided by the team of the Lab for Innovative Teaching, it was possible to explore the virtual scenario with the help of a virtual reality headset and to engage in conversation with all those involved in the project. In addition to this, we offered the tour of the demo version via a laptop that was connected via a beamer.

The virtual museum is divided into three rooms. In the Roman house, an ancient temple and a burial chamber plundered by grave robbers, objects from the JLU's collection of antiquities are waiting to be discovered and examined as 3D models. The beta version of the virtual museum was used for the project presentation. The next step will be to revise and optimise the desktop version based on feedback from visitors. This will probably be published at the end of the year.
