The University of Basel ranks at position 89 in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities. The Dpt. of Rheumatology in Basel is headed by Professor Alan Tyndall and has played a pivotal role in the foundation of EUSTAR, in establishing its MEDSonline database, and the World Scleroderma Foundation (http://www.w-s-a.net). The department has co-organized several international postgraduate teaching courses on SSc and pioneered treatment strategies, such as autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The department is located at the Felix Platter Spital, an affiliated entity of the University of Basel.

Expertise in setting up and managing disease related prospective cohorts on internet-based relational databases and biobanks (European Society of Immunodeficiencies (ESID), Ilaris-registry, MEDS-online registry of EUSTAR). Rheumatology department with a special interest in SSc-related clinical trials (ASTIS trial and others). Laboratory research on fibrosis and stem cells.

Team

Prof. Alan Tyndall, professor of rheumatology at the University of Basel is head of the Dpt. of Rheumatology in Basel at the Felix Platter Spital. Prof. Tyndall co-founded EUSTAR, its database, and the World Scleroderma Foundation. As previous chair of the ESCISIT (European League Against Rheumatism Standing Committee for International Clinical Studies Including Therapeutical Trials) committee and through numerous other activities, he is well positioned in providing advices and disseminating results.

Prof. Ulrich Walker, Rheumatologist, Internist, clinical and laboratory investigator, coordinates the work package. Prof. Walker is author of about 130 publications in peer-reviewed journals, 35 book chapters and 3 patents. He has broad experience in establishing and managing databases for disease cohorts and has previously co-founded ‘Toolwerk’, a company that developed such databases (now integrated in Freiburg University).

Dr. Bettina Bannert is a Rheumatologist who has participated in more than 50 industry sponsored clinical trials. Dr Bannert will monitor the database and biobank along with the manager to be recruited.

Cathy Faes will assist in secretarial work.
