Information for Students

Programme Information

The Sprachpraxis programme consists of two modules, an introductory module and an advanced module , each consisting of up to three or (exceptionally) four courses (A1, A2, A3, A4).

What courses you take, and when, depends on your degree option (BA major, BA minor, Lehramt Gymnasium, etc). For details, please consult the study plan ( Studienverlaufsplan ) for your degree programme below. Please be mindful of the fact that some courses are only available in either the summer or winter term, not both. Being aware of this helps you choose the right courses at the right time, avoiding unnecessary delays in your studies.

Introductory Module

Grammar is designed to solidify and extend students’ knowledge of, and communicative competence in, core areas of the English language system, the focus being on the grammar of the verb phrase. The General Language Course is an integrated skills course designed to boost students’ communicative competence in the four skills (speaking, writing, listening, reading), with a special focus on academic discourse.

On the basis of these first two courses, the Reading & Writing I course is geared to developing students’ literacy skills.

Completion of the Introductory Module is the prerequisite for attending the Advanced Module.

Advanced Module
Within this module, the following courses are currently offered: Speaking & Listening I (BA only), Speaking & Listening II, Reading & Writing II (BA only), Grammar II (L3 only), Classroom English (L3 only), Mediation (L3 only).

Business English and Communication

The Business English and Communication Section offers specialized language courses to help students build their confidence in academic and professional areas and to promote an understanding of the types of professional opportunities that lie ahead.

The module for BA students in the MFKW (Modern Languages, Cultures and Economics/Business Studies) course of studies provides an overview of the most interesting areas in business and economics with a focus on the necessary communication competencies in these subject areas . BA/MFKW students are required to take 'Business and Economics I' as a prerequisite course in the winter term before taking 'Business and Economics II', which is only offered in the summer term.  The BA course Introduction to Business Communication can be taken in either the winter or summer term.

At the graduate level (MA/MFKW), the courses offered include research seminars about corporate communications and related forms of organizational discourse, as well as profile courses on various topics of advanced communication, from Persuasion to Public Relations and Integrated Marketing Communications. Further topics include HRM, International Business and Intercultural Communications, as well as Media - all offered in rotation.

UNIcert®

As of 2023, students enrolled on the English Department's BA degree programmes can opt to take a UNIcert® III exam (CEFR level C1). This exam is administered by the Department's Language and Communication team. Two specializations are available:

JLU's Zentrum für fremdsprachliche und berufsfeldorientierte Kompetenzen (ZfbK) also offers UNIcert® courses and exams, in a range of languages and at levels I - IV. These are entirely independent of, and not to be confused with, the English Department's UNIcert® programme.

PLEASE NOTE: THIS TEST IS FOR STUDENTS OF THIS DEPARTMENT ONLY.
