Why do some children get good grades and others don't?
Prof. Dr. Claudia Friedrich (Universität Tübingen)
What assumptions do we have about good school performance? When do such assumptions arise in children, and what are they related to? This contribution examines some of the information and beliefs we provide for learning in our typical social environments, starting in early childhood. It is intended to sensitize parents, educational professionals, and teachers to identify their own typical assumptions and to question how helpful they are for children's development.

The Science of Friendship – Our Search for the Three Magical Superpowers (Talk for Children)
Dr. Katrin Rothmaler & Prof. Dr. Tina Malti (University of Leipzig)
Friendship is something truly special! But what exactly makes a good friendship? And what helps us to be kind, warmhearted, and helpful? Together, we’ll go in search of the three magical superpowers of friendship and explore moments that make friendships meaningful.
You’ll also learn how we conduct research through “rose-colored glasses” in the Leipzig longitudinal study on kindness in children (short: LiebKind). And how these glasses can help us strengthen the three friendship superpowers.

Little Children – Big Feelings
Luisa Lüken, Eva-Maria Schiller, Hannah Hermens & Joscha Kärtner (University of Münster)
When children's emotional rollercoaster picks up speed, things can get wild – tantrums, tears, or bursts of joy are all part of everyday family life.
In their early years, children are often overwhelmed by their emotions. Before they can regulate and express their feelings appropriately, they need to learn to recognize them: What am I feeling right now? And why do I feel this way?
What can be hard even for adults is an even greater challenge for children – and they depend on the support of their caregivers.
So how can parents support their children in emotionally challenging moments?
This talk offers parents practical insights into how to help their children regulate emotions and navigate the everyday ups and downs – together.

Leichtes Lernen – gutes Lernen? Über Lernprinzipien, die das langfristige Behalten fördern
Prof. Dr. Mirjam Ebersbach (University of Kassel) & Prof. Dr. Tobias Richter (University of Würzburg)
It's a common belief that learning is successful when it feels easy. But research on desirable difficulties in learning suggests the opposite: learners need to be active and put in effort during the learning process in order to retain information long-term.
Knowledge that stays with us over time provides a foundation for acquiring new knowledge and supports understanding and memory.
In this talk, we will present several learning principles that promote long-term retention through desirable difficulties. Drawing on selected research findings, we’ll discuss how these principles can be applied in everyday learning situations – whether in the classroom or during self-directed learning at home.
