The Justus-Liebig-University (JLU) is one of the most renowned universities in Germany ranking in Excellence Class with a special focus on biomedical sciences. JLU is continuously taking part in numerous national and international research consortia addressing cutting edge research in medicine close to the DeSScipher application, especially cardiopulmonary remodelling and inflammation, bone remodelling, inflammation and infection and a substituting international biomedical PhD program. Across different faculties a total of 15 EU grants within the 7th Framework Program have been granted to the JLU covering the themes cooperation, ideas, people and capacities.

Professor Müller-Ladner and his team run one of the largest rheumatology hospital departments in Germany serving more than 10.000 patients per year with all kinds of diseases from the rheumatology and clinical immunology field and have a longstanding (>20 years) experience in managing patients with rheumatic diseases, and specifically with SSc. The team has not only been amongst the founding centers in the pan-European EUSTAR initiative but also the founding centers of the German Network for Systemic Sclerosis. In addition, owing to a large-scale rheumatology outpatient clinic, phase I-IV trials are being continuously performed by the clinical trial center of the clinic and international training courses addressing all aspects of SSc are also being organized on a regular basis.

Role in the project

Professor Müller-Ladner and his team will be Project Coordinator and Management Team of the DeSScipher project including all aspects of organizing, managing and distributing the project as a whole.

 

Team

 

Prof. Ulf Müller-Ladner, Professor of Internal Medicine, Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, Director of the Department of Rheumatology. More than 20 years of experience in SSc management, clinical trials and training of clinicians and students. Author of numerous publications and book chapters in the field of SSc and other rare rheumatic diseases. At present, Prof. Müller-Ladner is also acting chairman of the EUSTAR consortium. Member of the steering committee of the German Network for Systemic Sclerosis. Long-standing collaboration with national and international patient associations. Chair of the Clinical Trials Panel of the German Ministry of Education and Research and the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Dr. Ingo H. Tarner, Consultant Rheumatologist and senior scientist. More than 10 years of experience in SSc management, clinical trials, basic science, and training of clinicians and students, chairman of the EUSTAR Young Investigator Group. Supervisor for the outpatient and inpatient SSc cohort of the center. 

Dr. Marc Frerix, MD, a rheumatology fellow with a distinct interest in clinical studies and biostatistics, and a focus on SSc, currently running the outpatient SSc cohort.
