Exploring the agronomic potential of wheat wild relatives

Project title

Exploring the agronomic potential of wheat wild relatives

Short description

Wheat domestication and breeding has greatly improved the productivity of wheat plants, but has also been accompanied by ‘genetic erosion’, i.e. the loss of potentially important genes and traits related to stress adaptation or product quality. In this project, we investigate members of the Triticeae tribe for traits that could help to provide balanced plant-based diets, improve stress resilience of cropping systems, and diversify crop production. We also devise strategies for harnessing these traits by introgression into domesticated wheat or de novo domestication.
