Studying in Giessen

Living and studying in the student city of Giessen offers a number of advantages over other German university towns. First of all, Giessen has the highest student population density in Germany. The approximately 37,000 students at JLU and THM (Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen) shape the cityscape, the leisure and cultural offerings, and the pub and restaurant scene. Furthermore, Giessen is a city of short distances: almost everything can be reached within 10 minutes by bike or bus. Giessen's central location is also special. The Frankfurt am Main metropolitan region, the international airport, and the neighboring city of Marburg can be reached by train in no time. Another big advantage is the university's student ticket, which allows students to use public transportation throughout all of Germany free of charge.

The Department of Geography is housed in two listed buildings in the center of Giessen: cafeterias, shopping facilities, the train station, etc. are all within easy reach. The department stands out for its familial atmosphere. For example, the department's student representatives organize events such as the GeoGrillen (Geo BBQ) and the GeoQuiz during the semester. The program is characterized by learning and discussion in small groups and individual support from lecturers. The project modules of the “Giessen Model of Geography” are unique in teaching. The projects combine in-depth methodological training with the teaching of geographical expertise. The project modules also allow students to specialize in the department's research groups.
