Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

Degree Program

The academic program "Geography" offered by Faculty 07 at Justus Liebig University leads to a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in six semesters (180 CP). The bachelor's program aims to provide students with professional skills and methods while also laying the foundation for in-depth academic work in a master's or doctoral program.

Geography is at the intersection of the natural sciences and the humanities. “Space” or the “spatial perspective” is the connecting element. Students therefore explore subjects from both the natural sciences (geomorphology, climatology, Quaternary science, soil science, etc.) and the social sciences/economics (population, economic geography, development research, spatial planning, etc.). This interdisciplinarity (natural hazards, geoarchaeology, etc.) effectively promotes both the employability of graduates and their basic scientific understanding, giving them a clear competitive advantage over other subjects and disciplines.

During their studies, students learn methods from the fields of physical geography, climatology, human geography, economic geography, spatial planning and urban geography. In addition to these areas, the acquisition of knowledge and methods in cartography, statistics, geoinformatics, data collection and analysis, as well as field, laboratory, and planning methods are an integral part of the program. After an introductory phase in which the basics of the respective areas are covered, students can specialize individually in the core phase. The “Giessen Model of Geography” is a unique feature of the program: the core of the concept is the integration of methodological training and the teaching of geographical expertise in “project modules.” This concept is what leads to a professionally qualifying Bachelor's degree that allows students to acquire individually chosen skill sets.

The bachelor's program is designed to appeal to students who are interested in both the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences. Furthermore, geography and its interdisciplinary function offer students the opportunity to engage with current events and issues (climate change, changing human-environment relationships, globalization, etc.).
