The doctoral process: procedure and forms

1. Provisional admission to doctoral studies
- At the beginning of your project, submit an application for provisional admission to doctoral studies, stating the desired doctoral path in accordance with the doctoral regulations.
- Enclose the original Bachelor's and Master's degree certificates or certified copies with the application.
- Name the desired supervisors and submit the confirmation of supervision:
- Fill out the questionnaire registration for doctoral studies and use the completion aid.
- Submit all documents to the Dean's Office no later than 3 months after the start of your project.
- You will receive confirmation of provisional admission to doctoral studies after your application has been processed by the Dean's Office.
2. Presentation of the doctoral project and final admission to doctoral studies
- Within one year of provisional admission: Presentation of the dissertation project.
- To do this, complete questionnaire B and submit it to the doctoral office of the Dean's Office.
- The doctoral office will send out the departmental invitation to the presentation of the dissertation project approximately two weeks in advance.

3. Submission of the dissertation and defense
- After successful completion of the doctoral dissertation:
- Submit the dissertation in triplicate to the Doctoral Office of the Dean's Office.
- Enclose the following documents:
- Cover letter for the formal submission of the doctoral documents,
- Copies of proof of examinations passed, doctoral seminars and presentations at conferences,
- Overview of courses attended in the form of the doctoral plan,
- Self-declaration of the relative proportion of jointly authored contributions.
- After complete submission: Examination procedure and assessment of the dissertation (correction period 3 months).
- After a written request from the Doctoral Office, pay the doctoral fee of € 300.
- The doctoral dissertation and assessment will be displayed in the Doctoral Office in the Dean's Office (2 to 4 weeks).
- An appointment with the examination committee will be arranged and invitations to the defense will be sent out by the Doctoral Office.
- There should be 12 months between the presentation of the doctoral thesis project and the defense.
- If necessary, the disputation period can be shortened by submitting an application to shorten the disputation period.
- After successful defense and approval for printing:
- Delivery of copies of the dissertation (printed or electronic) to the University Library Gießen.
- Submit a confirmation of the delivery of the copies to the University Library Gießen to the Doctoral Office.
- Issuing and handing over the doctoral certificate (in person or by registered mail).
4. End of the doctoral student status
- Fill out the form to end the doctoral student status.
- Submit the form to the Doctoral Office.
- This step is important to complete the administrative process correctly.
