PhD Workshop: Behavioral Industrial Organization

The international expert on the subject of behavioral industrial economics, Prof. Dr. Paul Heidhues,  accepted an invitation by Justus-Liebig-University Giessen on March 20 and 21, 2017. Within the framework of the PhD Workshop ‘Advanced Topics in Industrial Organization’ of the Chair for Industrial Organization, Regulation and Antitrust, Prof. Heidhues gave a lecture on the theoretical modeling of deviations of rational behavior of consumers and other market actors as well as the influence of these deviations on the strategic decisions of companies.

Prof. Heidhues is one of the leading experts in behavioral economics applications to problems in industrial organization and antitrust. He has published numerous scientific articles in leading journals in the field of economics, such as Quarterly Journal of Economics, Review of Economic Studies, Econometrica, and the American Economic Review. Additionally, Prof. Heidhues is a reviewer in various journals, such as American Economic Review and Econometrica. 

As part of the MAGKS PhD workshop of Prof. Dr. Georg Götz, Prof. Heihues presented current developments in the field of industrial organization with a focus on behavioural economics during the two days. The MAGKS program is a joint initiative of the universities in Marburg, Aachen, Giessen, Göttingen, Kassel and Siegen, which offers joint doctoral training in economics. Moreover, PhD students from the ZEW Mannheim and the Faculty of Agricultural Economics at the University of Giessen were among the participants. 

The aim of the PhD Workshop was to present the state-of-the-art research on  behavioral economics applications to classical problems such as monopoly pricing. Besides receiving a first-hand introduction on these topics, the PhD-students also had the opportunity to present and discuss their own work with Prof. Heidhues.
