Subject area
| The Master`s course Democracy and Cooperation imparts in-depth knowledge in the area of political science and the results of research in this area (policy analysis, norms and institutions, political processes and conflicts) in the context of social-scientific theories and methods. Special thematic focus is placed on the theory and the empirical bases of modern democracies and civil societies, the opportunities and obstacles of participation in them, and the opportunities and obstacles of international cooperation and political processes above and beyond the national state level and the states of the world. The main idea behind this course of study is the observation that today democratic life and government by the people are to be found in more countries than ever before in history. However, on the other hand processes of erosion in established democracies and the failure to achieve an established process of democratization in young democracies can be discerned so that one often speaks of the “post-democratic age”. Beyond the level of the national state and bi-national and multi-lateral relations between states gaps are appearing in democratic legitimacy together with obstacles of global cooperation. At the same time, new participants are appearing at the supra- and trans-national level. The course of study Democracy and Cooperation reflects the strengths of the Giessen profile which are, in among other elements, certified in the ENWISS evaluation (2003) and during the accreditation process for the BA Social Sciences. This includes the empirical social research on the one hand and the advanced orientation of subject-related research on the other hand. This can be seen in the seminars offered, which familiarise students with the results of recent research and are intended to draw students progressively as far as possible into the concept of learning through research. |
Entrance requirements
| The requirement for acceptance into the Master course is to have completed an applicable Bachelor`s degree at a university or an equivalent qualification (please refer to the special regulations) with a final mark of "good" or better. It is particularly important to prove knowledge in empirical social research and methods. The entrance requirements are checked by the board of examiners of JLU'S Faculty 03. A very good knowledge of German and English is required. |

Composition of degree programme
| The course of study Democracy and Cooperation, with a planned length of four semesters, fits into the same framework of basic and topic modules used so effectively in the BA Social Sciences. To allow variable studies and to offer a comprehensive curriculum within this limited period at the same time, there are three modules with 10 CP to be completed in each semester. All modules must be completed within one semester in each case. Flexibility is allowed with the topic modules in the 2nd and 3rd semester. According to placement regulations the compulsory internship can take place in the second or third semester; an external elective module, which can replace a political topic module, can also be taken either in the second or third semester. The module examinations take place as module-component examinations. Independent final module examinations are not planned. The core elements are, in the first semester, basic modules in the topic areas democracy (M1) and participation (M2), and the area of methodology (M3), which is concentrated in one module. The main part of the studies is the political science subject study in the 2nd and 3rd semester (M4-M8), augmented with a compulsory internship (M9). The 4th semester is exclusively reserved for the writing of the MA thesis and also for the MA examination (M10). In the subject study area (2nd and 3rd semester) the basis module International Cooperation (M4) and three topic modules must be completed. These three are to be chosen from the regularly offered four political science modules (M5-M8). An internship, which is accompanied by a vocationally-oriented class, must be done in the second or third semester. Instead of an elective political science module (M5-M8) an external module from one of the more closely connected MA study programmes (e.g. Society and Modern Cultures, Transition Studies or other subjects currently in the accreditation process) can be selected.
