W3 Professorship in Agrobioinformatics
The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Nutritional Sciences and Environmental Management invites applications for a
W3 Professorship in Agrobioinformatics
as of March 1st, 2027, or the earliest possible subsequent date. Reference is made to § 67 Para. 7 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) and to the conditions of employment based on § 68 HessHG. Proficient knowledge of German is expected.
Within the framework of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments, Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) is further expanding its scientific expertise in the fields of data science and applied informatics. This new appointment will strengthen the university-wide area of potential "Agricultural Systems and Resources" and is expected to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the JLU’s Center for Applied Computer and Data Science (ZAD).
Duties:
You will take responsibility for teaching within the faculty’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, which also include students from other faculties and study degree programs. Your active participation in the management of the new English-language master’s program "Agrobioinformatics" is desired.
In terms of research, the professorship should focus on overarching methodological questions regarding assessment of agricultural biodiversity (e.g., genome assembly or pan-genome analysis) and identification of trait-relevant data patterns linked to genome function (e.g., genome structure and gene regulation in key crop or livestock species).
Fostering international relations and a willingness to contribute to the further international networking of the faculty and JLU are expected.
You will also actively participate in interdisciplinary research projects within the faculty and JLU (e.g., in cross-disciplinary centers). In doing so, you will specifically contribute to the implementation of research initiatives within the JLU’s area of potential "Agricultural Systems and Resources". Active participation in the International Research Training Group (IRTG) 2843 “Accelerating Crop Genetic Gain” and in other collaborative research projects with internal and external partners is strongly encouraged.
Requirements:
We seek an internationally recognized researcher (m/f/d) who is deeply engaged with research questions in the field of agrobioinformatics.
The ability to teach in English is required.
A completed university degree, an outstanding doctorate in a relevant field, and additional academic achievements (e.g., demonstrated by a habilitation or internationally recognized, subject-specific publications) in the field of bioinformatics or a comparable discipline are required.
In addition to internationally recognized basic research in agrobioinformatics, practice-oriented collaborations with related disciplines – such as plant breeding or crop diversity – are desired.
Pedagogical aptitude as well as success in the independent acquisition (and management) of externally funded projects (preferably DFG, BMFTR, EU) are prerequisites.
In case the candidate exceeds the basic age limit of 50 years, a civil servant appointment under § 66 Para. 3 sentences 2 and 3 Hessian Higher Education Act (HessHG) in conjunction with § 11 Hessian Career Regulation (HLVO) requires a specific functional interest.
The JLU welcomes qualified applications regardless of biological and social gender (m/f/d), disability, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, age as well as sexual orientation and identity. The JLU aims for a higher proportion of women in accordance with the women's promotion plan. We therefore particularly encourage qualified female candidates to apply. JLU is certified as a family-friendly university. Applications from disabled people of equal aptitude will be given preference.
We strongly recommend candidates to refer to our fact sheet on application procedures.
Please send your application with the required documents via online form to the President of Justus Liebig University Giessen by July 31st, 2026, quoting the reference number 9-15/26.
